a mostly ballroom dance, but also a bunch of other stuff, blog

  • I watch a lot of dancing.  And more than that, I watch a lot of Really Good Dancing.  I watch so much Really Good Dancing, that while I enjoy watching all levels of dancing, I'm rarely Excited watching dancing.

    Ows_139128935345647

I was Excited to watch BBDC this year.

Taking on a slew of new dancers (shout-outs to Gary and April Dahl, Justin Carlson, Nicole Greibrock, Bonnie Inveen, Lisa Vogel, Tsha Marie, and Andrew Winett joining the veterans Christine Hallberg, Chris Kempainen, Julie Jacobson-Kendall, Deanne Michael, Jay Larson, and Shane Haggerty) and new choreography, the group performed three pieces, showing a huge range of ballroom styles from dark and emo Waltz to campy and silly Cha Cha.

My favorite piece happened to be the longest, so lucky me.  "Waltzing Over Moon River" (choreographed by Lisa Vogel and Deanne Michael) started out slow, a couple doing very basic figures to, you guessed it, "Moon River".  A lady behind me said, "I can do that"…   Lady, just wait.

Next, Bonnie Inveen and Chris Kempainen performed a gorgeous duet that reminded me of the athletic, yet beautiful dancing that one would see at a ballroom dance competition: she twirls! he looks studly! they dance!

    Then Waltz got funky.

April Dahl stomped on stage in her combat boots to drive Gary Dahl "Crazy" (dancing to the Aerosmith song; see what I did there?).  Besides her ability to dance like a bad-ass in boots, I have to say one of the highlights of the show for me was watching April  throw herself sideways at Chris and then LATCH ONTO HIM in one of the group numbers.  Awesome.

I often tell people there should more aggression in their Waltz: more drive, more impulse, more "HOO-AHH", less pretty.  That's where The Lisa Show came in.  Taking the stage for "I Put A Spell on You", a very dark, large ensemble number about death, and the foreboding "Que Sera Sera", Lisa Vogel's work both on stage and choreographically was spooky, aggressive, and fun. Lisa's hard not to watch as she's a great dancer and has the accolades to prove it.  Her effortless movement was distracting and Exciting.

Next was guest artists Tsha Marie and Andrew Winett from California's "He Said… She Said" piece, where I went going back and forth from thinking "Oh no, this is going to get un-Minnesotan real fast" to "MORE BURLESQUE".  The whole piece hovered somewhere between the two and in the end, I wanted it to cross the line from Minnesota Nice to Too Sexy, especially when all the ladies came up with chairs.  In the meantime, I loved Tsha's amazing red dress, the attractive cast numbers dancing the ensemble numbers, and Andrew's just-woke-up messy hair and shirt and well, just about everything about him.

Rounding out the show was the campy, over-the-top, and completely entertaining "Red Riding Hood" starring Deanne Michael as Little Red, Jay Larson as the naughty Wolf, and Julie Jacobson-Kendall as the boozy Grandma.  Dancing to thoroughly modern music from Jack White, the lady protagonists attract the attention of, woo, and then defeat the debauchously saucy Jay Larson.  It was funny, cute, and completed the wide arc of dancing that the company showcased.

    Bravo!

Keep up with the company here.  Give them money here.  Go see their show here, next year.

  • Ballroom dancers are an odd bunch.  Sterotyped as "Dancing With The Stars" wannabes while spending much of your income on a very subjective sport/art/pastime will make you quirky… and awesome.

Here are some signs you have gotten in the "swing" of things:

    1. You can no longer get funky.

    Tumblr_m5jl1iuU3S1rx46zjo1_500

    2. You call your sad attempt at getting funky as "freestyle dancing", but it still feels a lot like Cha Cha.

    Baby

    3. You have to think hard about what size you wear in non-dancing shoes…

    Tumblr_mm32aaiUV71sp7crao1_500

    4. …which you call "street shoes"…

    5. …because all your dance shoes are in international sizes…

    6. …for which you have a complicated AND COMPLETELY LOGICAL rotation of practice, performance, competition, and social dancing pairs.

    ballroom shoes

    7. You cringe at most dance scenes in movies… [even the ones with J Law and Will Tippen]

    Post-14126-Jennifer-Lawrence-dancing-Silv-lryg

    8. …but THIS movie was legit about invigilating, not to mention EVERYTHING ELSE.

    no new steps.

"NO NEW STEPS" – Strictly Ballroom

    9. You have a list of songs that NO ONE ELSE CAN DANCE TO, because you claimed them as your future Showdance songs.

    3b287eadff4b5f61ef6886e950a6e848d8386cffce03e25a88defab705eb1cc7

     10. You count out every new song you hear, hoping for a new practice song.

    Taylor-swift-sweet-dance-moves-gif-19

    11. You refuse to add up how much you spend on lessons, floor fees, costumes, makeup, and the like, because… ouch.

    Make-it-rain

    12. Pedicures are worthless: they have a short life and remove all those hard-earned calluses.

    13. People "love" or "hate" you by giving you an X… or not.

    Giphy

    14.  You only own black socks.

    Giphy-1

    15. You Shazam songs in the elevator.

    Tumblr_lq2gaekx2n1qht847

    16. You know fishnets are not only for Halloween costumes and hookers.

    Fishnets-1

    17. You own a lot of makeup.

  • Hi.

    Long time no see.

    Let's get down to business:

    – at the beginning of December, we signed a lease on this place:

    Mill City Ballroom before

    ye olde Oddfellows Hall

    – after we got some money, we spent the last two weeks in December turning that space into this:

    Mill City Ballroom after

    la nouvelle Mill City Ballroom

    – but let's face it, we didn't do most of the work:

    just like Cinderella

St. Paul is exempt from child labor laws, right?

    – our help was generally over-dressed and couldn't reach the 12' ceilings.

    painting

they also wore their shoes on the wrong feet

    – The high parts were up to us.

    don't fall down

totally not awkward or scary painting position

    – On January 1, we opened Mill City Ballroom.

    Mill City Ballroom

    delicious design by Gretchen

    – A River/Rainbow Banshee (weird inside joke, I digress) helped me cater the shindig, because I didn't have enough on my plate already (see what I did there?).

food on a stick – a Minnesota tradition

    – People came.  People danced.

    thanks again, Joel!

more than our estimated 22 people

    – We danced, too.

    dancing

    life is better upside down

    – 10 days later, we went to the Snow Ball Dancesport Competition where everyone won everything and the whole weekend was delighful and well-organized.

    thanks, Mike!

    – to finish off the weekend, our friend got stuck in an elevator and we called in the calvary.

    stuck in an elevator

    yes, firemen

    – 8 days later, we hopped on a plane, boarded a cruise ship, and danced and played with a bunch of charming people for our "working" vacation.  I don't mean to brag, so I'll just show you these:

    Puerto Rico

    Puerto Rico kicks ass
    Holland America's private island

Half Moon Cay ain't bad either

So, how's 2014 treating you?  Are you going to come visit our ballroom?  Are you planning vacations to escape The Vortex?  Are you eating bon-bons and watching soap operas?  I LIKE ALL THOSE IDEAS.

    Day 20 : decorate "trees".

Confession: I am a holiday bargain hunter.  I pick out the majority of my birthday/summertime/Christmas/Easter goodies and then wait until after the holiday to pick them up for 90% off.

All my twinkle lights? $1.94.  Score.

Last year, I snatched some little kid craft kits for 70 cents and  I AM THE SMARTEST.

We've been doing a lot of cosmetic work on our soon-to-be dance studio, so it's been a handful to MAKE CHRISTMAS MEMORIES and PAINT ALL THE THINGS.  But I unfurled this neat kit with foam pieces and they were happily making fancy trees for hours.

Strangely, Zoo was most amused by them.  She enjoyed taking the paper off the sticky backing for the smallest pieces.

Day 19 : Go to the zoo.

    "Go to the zoo."

    That's what the card said.

V opened the bag to reveal the day's activity…

    And read it.

    Yay, V!

    GO TO THE ZOO!

Como Zoo has a great Thursday morning kids' program: it's free, it's educational, and it's not annoying.

There's one room with different stations of activities that your little ones can check out at their own pace: flash cards, matching games, memory games, fine motor skill play, puppets, art supplies: all focused on the theme of the week.

This week was "Animals in Winter".

The conservatory gardens are open, so you can get a dose of heat and humidity, or just check out the sloth, or take bad family photos.

Do you have a favorite local zoo?  What's your favorite animal to see or thing to do?  Doesn't this totally tie in with the stable and the manger and all that?  I KNOW, RIGHT?!

    Day 17 : make your sister's bed.

    Lame, right?

WRONG.  The little ladies thought this was HILARIOUS.

The Advent story was about Joseph trying to find a spot to stay in Bethlehem, so our story was Joseph and Mary were coming to stay at our house.  I got them to clean the bathroom for the occasion, too.

    Winning!

Day 18 : watch The Nutcracker ballet.

Does anyone else find this story totally creepy?  Maybe I'm not educated enough to get the nuances or metaphors or something, but Papa Drosselmeyer gives me the heebie-jeebies, Clara seems overly fragile, and the ballet itself does nothing dancey-wise for me.

Nonetheless, we watched it.  And then the girls pranced up the stairs for bedtime.

    What's your favorite Christmas movie?

Day 16 : give toys away.

There's a bunch of ideas on Pinterest about "Santa sacks", where your kids fill up a bag of out-grown and/or under-used toys to leave for Santa under the tree.  Since the little ladies are well acquainted with Goodwill and the idea behind it, we just gathered up toys that were "not our favorites anymore", in V's words.

I was surprised what they were willing to part with and how many toys we ending up donating.  They were excited at the prospect of other kids getting to play with toys that "might suit them better than us".

All very heartwarming.  Like this.  And this.

    Day 15 : candy hunt.

The story of the day in ye olde Advent book was "The Search", where the three wise men were a-lookin' for the new king.

In my usual way, I loooooosely used that for the basis of today's activity.

Also as usual, I found it very important that I have fun doing The Thing.  And guess what?  Hiding candy?  FUN.

Day 14 : visit Santa and watch The Grinch

How else do I celebrate the day before my birthday, other than getting violently ill?  Send my husband and little ladies out for a tasty and hilarious Breakfast with Santa, of course.

I never plan on bringing the ladies to see Saint Nic, it just happens.  If we're in town, my great-auntie invites her great-GREAT-nieces out to her country club for a Christmas shindig.  It's always fun: good food, adult beverages for the…adults, SANTA, an adorable jazz trio of octogenarians playing "The Hokey Pokey" and other classics, cookie decorating, etc.

This year, Mae Cake stumped Santa by boldly walking up to him, poking him in the leg, and asking, "Where's your reindeer?"  The G was surprised the big guy didn't have a pat answer for this one, but she can be a little alarming.  When Mae was done telling him what she wanted, she asked Santa if he wanted to dance.  Again, Big Red wasn't sure what to say to the wee Cake. She shrugged and said goodbye.  Priceless.

As you can imagine, I don't have pictures of the goings-on, but if The G sends his evidence to me, I'll post them ASAP.

Do you take your kids to see Santa?  Do you avoid Santa?  DO YOUR KIDS ALREADY KNOW ABOUT SANTA?
